Frequently Asked Questions

Preparing for Your Session

Hydration and Nutrition
The lymphatic system is your body’s waste removal system, and it functions best when you’re well-hydrated. On the day of your session, it's recommended that you increase your intake of water, electrolytes, and warm herbal teas. A light snack before or after your session can also support your body during detoxification.

What Should I Wear?

You will be asked to undress to your comfort level for the session. You may choose to leave your underwear on or remove them—whichever feels right for you. You will remain fully draped with a sheet throughout the session, and only the areas being worked on will be uncovered as needed.

When Should I Return After an Illness?

If you’re recovering from an illness, it’s important to allow your body time to heal before receiving lymphatic work. Your lymphatic system is already under increased stress managing the illness, and a session could overwhelm it further—potentially worsening your condition or triggering a relapse.
It’s recommended to wait until you’re at least 90% recovered before booking your session. Karen also takes great care to avoid exposing herself, her treatment space, or other clients to illness that could be inadvertently transmitted.

When Is Bodywork Contraindicated?

Health Considerations and Contraindications

To ensure your safety and the effectiveness of your session, please review the following conditions. In some cases, medical clearance will be required.

Acute Conditions

  • Cold, Flu, Fever, or COVID
If you are experiencing symptoms of a cold, flu, fever, or COVID, it is not the right time for bodywork. Sessions during this period may worsen symptoms or cause relapse. Please wait until you are at least 90% recovered before scheduling.
  • Acute Thrombosis / Phlebitis
These conditions can lead to blood clots in the circulatory system. A doctor’s release is required before resuming sessions after treatment.
  • Major Cardiac Issues
If your heart is not functioning optimally, increased fluid movement from bodywork may stress your cardiovascular system. A doctor’s release is necessary before treatment.
  • Cancer, Tumors, or Undiagnosed Lumps
Bodywork may be performed with a doctor’s consent. A medical release is required before beginning treatment.
  • Cortisone Injections
Manual therapy may interfere with cortisone effectiveness. A doctor’s release is needed to resume sessions after injections.
  • Hemorrhage or Active Bleeding
Bodywork should be avoided if active bleeding or significant bruising is present.

Female-Specific Considerations

  • Menstruation
Lower abdominal work should be avoided during menstruation. Please inform your therapist if you are on your cycle at the time of your appointment.
  • Pregnancy
Shorter sessions may be recommended during the first trimester. For healthy pregnancies beyond that stage, there are no contraindications unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider.
  • IUD (Intrauterine Device)
Lower abdominal palpation should be avoided for clients with an IUD. Please notify your therapist prior to your session.

Common healing responses you may experience after your session.

Following your session, you may experience a few common healing responses as your body adjusts. These reactions are generally temporary and are signs that your body is effectively processing and detoxifying. Here are some of the responses you might experience:

  • Detox/Cold or Flu-like Symptoms
It’s possible to feel detox symptoms, such as mild cold or flu-like sensations. If this occurs, increase your water intake, drink electrolyte-rich beverages or herbal teas, and consider a warm Epsom salt bath to support your body’s detox process.
  • Increased Elimination
You may notice more frequent urination or bowel movements as your body works to eliminate toxins more efficiently.
  • Relaxation and Better Sleep
Lymphatic Drainage targets the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes deep relaxation. You might experience improved sleep or a sense of calm following your session. It’s also possible to release old emotional or physical trauma during this process.
  • Relief in Areas Like the Sinuses, Ears, and Head
By stimulating the lymphatic system, adhesions can break down, improving drainage in areas such as the sinuses, ears, and head. This can help alleviate cognitive issues and enhance mental clarity.
