Q: How should I prepare for a lymphatic session?
A: The lymphatic system functions like a waterway and relies on proper hydration to move fluid and waste effectively. In the hours leading up to your session, increase your water intake and consider adding electrolytes to support optimal hydration. A light snack before or after your session can help stabilize your energy and support your body’s natural healing response.
Q: What should I wear to my session?
A: You’ll be asked to undress to your comfort level. You’re welcome to leave your underwear on or remove them—whatever feels most comfortable for you. You will remain fully draped with a sheet throughout the session, with only the area being worked on briefly uncovered as needed.
Q: When should I return after an illness?
A: If you’re recovering from an illness, it’s important to give your body time to heal before receiving lymphatic work. Because your lymphatic system is already under increased stress, a session too soon could overwhelm it, potentially worsening symptoms or causing a relapse.
It’s best to wait until you’re at least 90% recovered before booking a session. Karen also takes care to avoid exposing herself, her treatment space, or other clients to contagious illnesses.
Q: How often should I schedule sessions?
A: It’s recommended to begin with three sessions, scheduled once a week for three consecutive weeks. This gives your body time to respond gradually and provides an opportunity to clarify your goals. During this period, Karen will assess your needs and collaborate with you to create a personalized plan.
Depending on your health and how your body responds, additional weekly sessions may be recommended until your goals are met. After that, a maintenance schedule—typically every 4 to 6 weeks—can be discussed to support ongoing wellness.
Q: Can I wear perfume or essential oils to my appointment?
A: No. Please avoid wearing perfume, essential oils, or heavily scented products. Many clients are sensitive to fragrance, and a neutral environment is essential for everyone’s comfort.
Acute Conditions
Cold, Flu, Fever, or COVID
If you are experiencing symptoms of a cold, flu, fever, or COVID, it is not an appropriate time for bodywork. Sessions may worsen symptoms or lead to relapse. Please wait until you are at least 90% recovered before scheduling.
Acute Thrombosis / Phlebitis
These conditions increase the risk of blood clots. A doctor’s release is required before resuming sessions.
Major Cardiac Issues
If your heart is not functioning optimally, the increased fluid movement from bodywork may place added stress on your cardiovascular system. A doctor’s release is necessary before treatment.
Cancer, Tumors, or Undiagnosed Lumps
Manual therapy may be appropriate with a doctor’s consent. A medical release is required prior to beginning treatment.
Cortisone Injections
Bodywork may interfere with cortisone effectiveness. A doctor’s release is recommended before resuming sessions after injections.
Hemorrhage or Active Bleeding
Bodywork should be avoided during periods of active bleeding or significant bruising.
Female-Specific Considerations
Menstruation
Lower abdominal work should be avoided during menstruation. Please inform your therapist if you are on your cycle at the time of your appointment.
Pregnancy
Shorter sessions may be recommended during the first trimester. For healthy pregnancies beyond that stage, sessions are generally safe unless otherwise advised by your healthcare provider.
IUD (Intrauterine Device)
Lower abdominal palpation should be avoided for clients with an IUD. Please notify your therapist before your session.
Detox / Cold & Flu–Like Symptoms
You may experience mild cold or flu-like sensations as your body releases toxins. To support this process, increase your water intake, drink herbal teas or electrolyte-rich beverages, and consider taking a warm Epsom salt bath.
Increased Elimination
More frequent urination or bowel movements are common as your body eliminates waste more efficiently through the lymphatic and digestive systems.
Relaxation and Better Sleep
Lymphatic drainage activates the parasympathetic nervous system, often resulting in deep relaxation, improved sleep, and a greater sense of calm. Some clients also experience emotional or physical releases during or after the session.
